Religious Sites in New Orleans

By Herald Moores

There are several religious sites in New Orleans. This town has some very unusual spiritual landmarks too. Taking a brief look at these different places will hopefully inspire you to make a journey to this impossible to believe town.

St. Louis Cathedral

This is the oldest cathedral in the United States that is still active. It is located in the back of the significant Jackson Square. The prevailing cathedral is actually the 3rd building to stand in this particular spot. It dates all the way back to 1794. This cathedral is really dramatic looking. Among New Orleans religious landmarks, this is a total must see.

Voodoo Spiritual Temple

This is undoubtedly one of the more strange religious sites in New Orleans. It was set up in 1990, and is hip with the holiday makers. It is based upon West African Spiritual practices. The key room in the church contains changes with many offerings on them. The church attempts to prove disinformation about Voodoo wrong. They offer many different things for visitors. These are weddings, blessings, bone readings, and even special rituals. It is run by the Priestess Miriam who also cells CDs of her different chants.

Saint Ann Shrine

This shrine commenced as an official activity for the Saint Ann Parish. It commenced in 1902. From the very beginning, it was a place for official celebrations, like marriage. This New Orleans spiritual landmark was made as a copy of the grotto at Lourdes. On the right outside wall is a tiny statue of the Perfect Conception. Underneath that is holy water, which visitors collect in bottles. On the left of the grotto is a little present shop. The apex of the grotto is totally open to see the sky. This is a pretty shrine with lots of focus on detail.

Saint Joseph Catholic Church

This church was dedicated in 1892. This religious landmark has the longest aisle of any church in New Orleans. It's a really ornate and gorgeous church. The church is still extremely active in New Orleans. It's a enormous church, as it can seat as many as 2000 people. The original church that was built wasn't nearly the size it is today.

Saint Roch and the Campo Santo

This New Orleans non secular landmark has an especially engaging history. In 1867, there was a pandemic and a local priest asserted a prayer to Saint Roch. St. Roch is the guardian saint of plaque victims. When everyone survived, a chapel was built to laud it. Visitors can leave presents in a tiny room off the change. These gifts should be gifts of healing, like medicine. The collection of gifts which has been left in the tiny room has been said to be really bizarre, and sometimes even creepy.
