The 4 Most Useful Iphone Apps For Australian Road Trips

By Tim Ahern

After having dug into lots of i phone and apple ipad applications that will assist the traveller travel around Australia, these are definitely those that I travel with and I believe are the most useful iPhone apps for exploring in Oz. There are numerous others that deal with eating venue reviews as well as a multitude of additional categories, these ones are especially tailored to help you out if you are on the road in Australia in a campervan. That being said, a few of them can come in very handy when doing day walks around the city or when floating through any city in the country.

Show the Loo - free. This terrific little app tells you where all the public toilets are that are near you. It is especially handy when doing city hikes but also can be handy if you are searching for a sneaky free park in a larger town. In all the major capital cities it can be difficult to find official camping places that are close to anything good. If you are trying to reduce costs and continue to use their camper in one of these larger cities, this app can let you know where almost all the toilets are in the area. Some are 24hr toilets and it will also show the ones which have showers etc. So long as you obey any parking laws and regulations (if there are any), then you are free to stay in the vehicle over night. Its a simple app, but is THE most convenient app to have in Oz. You can also perform a search in advance for any towns you might be arriving in that you want to stay in overnight, that way you know where you want to park overnight when you arrive in the town.

Campee - free. This app describes where all the free camps and caravan parks are around Australia. Its free but you must set up an account with them. It would like you to sign in with Facebook, however there are other possibilities to set up account with an email. I employed an email address and I have had no spammy marketing from them. The most irritating point about this app is that if you leave it for 5 minutes or so it asks you to log back in which means constantly typing in email and password.

There is a "near me" icon on the home page so if you just want to find out what is nearest camp site or caravan park to you, then just click that at it should bring up your current position. Surrounding where you are on the map will be places to stay. Conversely, type in the town you intend to camp near and it will bring up a map with the town pinned and show all the campsites, roadside rest areas and caravan parks nearby.

Another highlight is a substantial filter range to pick different elements you are keen on. To start out with you can make a distinction between campground and caravan park or both, you can even filter free or paid or both. Then there is a listing of 41 filters of "must have" items if you happen to be after them, this is things like toilets, showers, laundries, phone reception etc. After you have filtered things, each remaining icon on the map will highlight the facilities available when you select them. The app is end user driven, so people add info as they go along. You can add in details like pictures and evaluations to help out the community. This app costs nothing and does a very good job. This app works the best when you are not in a capital city as there are few caravan parks or designated overnight stays within the larger cities. For these cities use Show The Loo.

Wiki Camps Australia $2.99 (also available for Android). If you are looking for the most effective camping and caravan iPhone app for Australia it is going to have to be this tool. It will cost you a small fee though. Starting an account is non-compulsory, but gives you accessibility to post in community forums if you do. If you ever don't set one up you can still read the forums that are accessible within the app.

This app is also end user driven and so has details uploaded by other people. It seems to have the jump on Campee for now with a few more comments and photos added by members. This app seems to have more listings for places to camp and has a lot more obvious listings for additional services like dump sites. If you have a campervan which includes a a toilet then this app is perfect for you. When using no filters at all in your search, then this app will also display things like information centres and Points of Interest on the map near the town you requested. It possesses 57 filters to customise your search, but can be a little more challenging to initially navigate than Campee. After you get the hang of it though, it is pretty easy to manage and is more powerful.

Additionally there is a download for offline section which is practical in a country that has such awful mobile data coverage. You are able to select by state but it takes a looong time to download, even on a wifi connection.

Around Me - free. This i phone and iPad app was designed to show what is around you wherever you are: it has categories like ATM (automatic teller machines), bars, coffee and cafes, hospitals, accommodations, parking, fuel, supermarkets and more. It is improving all the time but regrettably is now ad driven. They are not too interfering though. It doesn't always list everything that is near you in the category you search, but it is very quick and will find some thing in the category you want. Convenient not just if you are traveling through a town looking for a supermarket, but also great if you would like a stay a while. I understand that this app works in the US so I am thinking it will most likely work across the Tasman in New Zealand as well. (so put it on the list for the iphone travel apps for New Zealand too).

Happy Travels
