The Finest Beach Town In America

By Heather Hunnefeld

The little beach-town of Solana Beach is nestled along the Pacific Ocean's sandy coast approximately 22 miles north of the San Diego airport. It's bordered by the protected San Elijo Lagoon (great hiking and jogging trails!) on the north, the chic town of Del Mar (and it's horse race track) on the south, the popular Lomas Santa Fe Country Club on the east and, of course, the sparkling Pacific Ocean on the west.

Solana Beach lives up to it's "sol" name with sunny winter temperatures averaging 60 - 62 degrees. Summer highs rarely exceed a comfortable 75 - 77 degrees thanks to the ocean's sea breezes. The combination of wonderful weather, palm trees and sparking ocean give Solana Beach a reputation as a near-perfect paradise.

There is more to Solana Beach than just near-perfect weather - there is something for everyone: great dining, diverse shops, surfing, an active nightlife scene, bicycling along the ocean, hiking and nature walks along the lagoons, and, of course, beautiful beaches - where every evening residents and visitors alike gather to enjoy world-class sunsets.

The Cedros Design District is well-known as an enclave of coolness with the quaintness and aura of a European side-street. Here visitors find an enchanting 2 blocks of more than 85 unique and trendy shops: furniture from around the world, out of the ordinary antiques, hand-woven tapestry, charming jewelry, adventure gear, organic restaurants, spas, studios and salons. all coming together to make Cedros one of San Diego's most interesting areas.

Famous in San Diego and throughout Southern California, the Belly Up Tavern in Cedros has a long history of bringing diverse musical acts on an almost nightly basis. It's been voted the best live music establishment in San Diego almost annually by the media and has even been called "one of the hippest and hottest music scenes anywhere on the California coast" by Rolling Stone Magazine.

Next door to the Cedros District is part of coastal California's outstanding rail system. The local commuter train, the Coaster, and California's coastal Amtrak stop at the Solana Beach station at 105 N. Cedros Ave., providing easy access to San Diego as well as towns and cities along the coast of California.

Each summer the Solana Beach Triathlon Club sponsors the Solana Beach Triathlon starting with an ocean swim and followed by bike riding and a three mile run. Thousands of participants and spectators fill Solana Beach each year to enjoy friends, family, weather and sports in the town of surf, sand and sun.

Solana Beach was the first city in the U.S. to enact a no-smoking ordinance on its public beaches. Dozens of other coastal California communities have since followed suit in banning smoking on public beaches.

The coastal area of Solana Beach along historic Highway U.S. 101 was mostly developed in the 1950s and 1960s, consisting of a diverse mix of offices, businesses, shops, restaurants, hotels, motels, resorts and apartments.

East of Interstate 5 is the Lomas Santa Fe golf course surrounded by high-priced newer homes. More than two-thirds of Solana Beach was built in the last twenty years. The Jenny Craig Corporation is located in Solana Beach, employing more than 180 people.

There are many lovely inns near the beaches in the San Diego area including Solana Beach Bed and Breakfasts and Cardiff By The Sea Inns.
