Koh Phangan in Thailand is one of the islands that many people love to visit. It is known mostly for its Full Moon Party, which takes place every month. I have been to this awesome event a couple of times. Although it is on every month, most people visit this place in large numbers between December and March. The majority of people come to Koh Phangan to relax at the great beaches, as well as for the the Full Moon Party.
My first time to visit Koh Phangan was in December 2008. This was around Christmas and it was a full moon. I saw crazy scenes that made me love the place. My friend Chrissie and I whilst we were there went to Haad Rin Beach for the Full Moon Party, We actually danced from sunset until dawn on the beach. Whilst at Haad Rin Beach for the Full Moon Party I enjoyed a variety of food and drinks. I had a chance to taste the Thai meals for the first time. They were indeed mouth-watering! I enjoyed beer while my friend Chrissie drank cocktails.
One thing that gets you as a newbie is the amount of people that attend the Full Moon Party. There must have been at least 30,000 people there the first time I was there. There is music always pumping around the beach and thousands of people dancing the night away. The Full Moon Party sees plenty of street performers or buskers keeping the crowd entertained, and everyone just gets on the "buckets". A Full Moon Party bucket is a concoction of different spirits and plenty of Red Bull. Oh and don't miss the fire rope jumping. You will soon see why it is well worth a look.
I have never found getting accommodation an issue on Koh Phangan, since the place has several hotels, hostels and resorts right near the beach. We always stay at Seaview Sunrise Resort located at the far end of Haad Rin Beach. Although there are enough resorts and hotels for accommodation, sometimes it is best to make your booking in advance because of the high number of people visiting for the Full Moon Party.
So how do you get there? Well with no flights to Koh Phangan, you have to go via a place called Surat Thani on the mainland or from the island of Koh Samui. Once you get to either of those two places you can get a ferry over to Koh Phangan. There is also an overnight train or bus that will get you to Surat Thani from Bangkok, but you still have to get the ferry to Koh Phangan after that. Hey, there are also Thailand Full Moon Party tour operators that will organise everything for you if you don't want to do it all yourself.
As I explained earlier, the Thailand Full Moon Party is hard to explain to someone who hasn't been before. You really have to go and do it for yourself to get a feeling for what it is like. I believe that the Koh Phangan Full Moon Party is well worth the trip though if you're ever in Thailand. Actually do you recall the Leonardo De Caprio movie, The Beach? The Full Moon Party was portrayed in that movie.
