The Best North American Destinations For New Year's Eve Celebrations

By Abby Cassinia

With the New Year just around the corner, now's the time to make your New Year's resolutions, drink away the last year's regrets and celebrate starting all over again next year. As the Christmas lights start to fade and the holiday season comes to an end, there's still the age old question of where to celebrate one of the most epic nights out of the year, New Year's Eve.

There is some really exciting must-do New Year's Eve events across the globe in nearly every continent. Ever wondered what it would be like to do a New Year's Eve trip somewhere other than singing 'Auld Lang Syne' with a bunch of strangers in your local pub or bar?

A recent survey conducted by a social network across 17 countries and four continents showed Brazilians were considered the top nationality that the rest of the world would most like to party with on New Year's Eve. As New Year's Eve falls in the middle of Brazil's summer, the climate is perfect for large outdoor parties to welcome the New Year. The festivities are held in cities across the country and for those near the beach on New Year's Eve, the tradition in Brazil is to jump seven waves at midnight while throwing flowers in the sea and making a wish, apparently it is one wish for each wave. However, none of the Brazilian cities can match the scale of the NYE party on Rio De Janeiro Copacabana Beach. With 2.5 million partygoers in attendance it is considered the biggest New Year's Eve party in the world and Copacabana Beach has giant stages set up along the oceanfront with music, Carnival-style costumes, traditional dance performances and fairground attractions keeping people entertained throughout the night.

Nowhere on earth does nightlife like Las Vegas and with "Sin City" already having the glitz, glamour and lavish indulgences, it's a natural destination for New Year's Eve celebrations. The biggest night of the year sees over 300,000 people descend on the party capital, reinforcing its status as a perennial party town. If you are in Las Vegas for New Year's Eve you can count on packed casinos, performances by major acts and parties hosted by celebrities, as well as plenty of dancing in the street. Yes, they have a street party on The Strip in Vegas for NYE! Every year The Strip gets closed off to motor vehicles and thousands of pedestrians take over the famed Las Vegas Strip to create a promenade where you can drink, mingle and watch fireworks shot off from surrounding rooftops throughout the night.

One of the world's first major cities to celebrate NYE, Sydney's New Year's Eve firework show is renowned around the globe. The fireworks exploding above Sydney Harbour is probably the World's most famous New Year's Eve celebration aside from the New York City Times Square Ball Drop. What makes Sydney better to be at than New York City though, is that 31 December is summertime in Australia and you can pretty much expect a warm night out.

Other worldwide destinations that have great New Year's Eve experiences include New York, London, Las Vegas, Amsterdam, Miami and Paris.

You know you don't want to miss it... So make sure you get your New Year's Eve travel plans sorted out, because the only question is, where will you be when the clock strikes midnight on 31 December this year?
