The Best In L.A.: A One-Day Excursion

By Marquerite Velasquez

Los Angeles is one of the hottest vacation destinations in the country and for good reason. With great weather and plenty to do, there's something for every visitor to do. But what happens if you're here for just one day? How do you pick and choose? Well, consider the following itinerary for you one day of fun in L.A.

The county of Los Angeles offers hundreds of amazing places to visits, but with more than 9 million residents and 4,000 square miles, seeing it all in one day is impossible. So instead of worrying about what you will miss, take advantage of some of the cool things that you can see, such as a trip to Southern California's famous coastline.

So, with that in mind, start off your day with a breakfast by the sea. Santa Monica, a place where you can enjoy the beach, is Southern California's most iconic pier with plenty of quirky shops and people watching. There are plenty of cafes, bakeries and coffeehouses where you can grab a quick breakfast and then walk over to the pier and ride the carousel, Ferris wheel and roller coaster in Pacific Park.

If you think that everything in Los Angeles is new, you are quite mistaken. In the latter part of the 18th century, Spain established missions throughout California and Mexico and Los Angeles County contains two of the missions, both of which can be visited. Mission San Fernando Rey, which dates back to 1797, is located in the aptly named district of Mission Hills. The Mission San Gabriel Arcangel is another option, located in the city of San Gabriel, and this mission was completed in 1771, so it's actually older than the United States.

New York might have Central Park, but here in L.A., we have Griffith Park which is just as big and impressive. In fact, it's actually bigger and the second largest park in the United States with more than 4,300 acres. In addition to a planetarium complete with the Griffith Observatory, there is the Los Angeles Zoo to enjoy and Travel Town, a railroad museum. You can also grab a picnic lunch and enjoy the beautiful scenery.

At this point, you will definitely be need of some refreshment, so drive to Culver City and enjoy the confections at YoKuMon. This popular eatery sells a variety of sweet treats, including shaved ice, ice cream, freshly baked cookies and their most popular treat, the $2 ice cream sandwich. This isn't just a plain old ice cream sandwich either; this is a scoop of gourmet ice cream placed between two large and freshly made cookies. You can choose any combination of ice cream and cookies, and there is more than a dozen of each option.

After this, the best way to cap off your evening is to spend it at the Hollywood Bowl. This outdoor theater, home to the Los Angeles Philharmonic, is not only an amazing bit of L.A. architecture, the view of the Hollywood Sign and Hollywood Hills make it a perfect L.A. venue. Artists vary from classical to jazz to even modern stars such as Pearl Jam. There are dozens of events to consider, so before you arrive in town, see if you can score tickets to something special on your one day in L.A.
