Ko Chang is an island that is tropical and full of trees. There are a number of large mountains and waterfalls. The beaches are lovely and range from rocky to sandy. The resort that you pick will need to be chosen by what you prefer. This is the island that I prefer in all of Thailand.
In the Thai language "ko" means island, and "chang" means elephant. Elephant Island was given its name because the shape of the island vaguely resembles the profile of an elephant. Although elephants are not indigenous to Ko Chang, there are presently several living on the island.
There are several kinds of animals found on Ko Chang. The island has more than 60 species of birds, deer, snakes, the Ko Chang Wart Frog, the Small Asian Mongoose, the Small Indian Civet, and Monkeys. You can often see wildlife if you drive the road around the island, or go on a nature hike.
Ko Chang is a hilly island and is renowned for its waterfalls, tropical forests and abounding coral reefs and sea animal life. Together with hostels, resorts, golden beaches and rocky beaches, there are 9 little hamlets on the island, typically found on the west side. This side of the island is quiet and is a pleasant drive to run away from the resorts and traveler.
A ferry takes people and cars across to the Ko Chang. It is a short trip and gives people the chance to take in the beauty of the island. The boarding and getting off the ferry is usually very fast and convenient. You can then grab a taxi to your resort or hotel.
The waterfalls are an attraction you don't what to miss, on the island. Klong Plu is the best known of the falls and offers a chance to cool off, with a nice pond for swimming. The best time to go is morning, because it's usually cooler. It is about a 20 minute walk to the falls. This gives you a chance to take-in the wildlife and fauna along the way. If you are feeling really adventurous you can climb the rocks and jump into the pool, not recommended but it was fun.
Some of the things worth doing and see on Ko Chang include. Cycle tours which are the simplest way to get some exercise while seeing the local culture. Ship tours to local islands are offered by long-tail boats or speed boats. Elephant treks by arrangement with travel bookers found on the island. Underwater diving lets you fully explore the clear waters round the island, with tons of exotic fishes.
There is only one road on the island that follows the ocean form one end to the other. The problem is that it ends and doesn't make a complete circle around the island. The road can be treacherous and especially in the rain, so be careful if you are driving.
The resorts and hotels can be very crowded in the busy season from about November to February. So I would be sure to book a spot early if you are planning a trip to the island. It is a lovely island with a certain charm that is very appealing.
