How To Plan A Great Galapagos Islands Cruise

By Linda Ruiz

The Galapagos Islands is an archipelago located near Ecuador. This place is visited by many travelers, botanists and scientists. They come to see the multitude of plants and animals that freely roam, live and grow there. One of the best ways to get there is to book a galapagos islands cruise.

First, you will need to decide what boat you want to take your cruise on. Speak to a travel agent and ask them if they have any brochures that can give you an idea of what your options are. You will need to consider the sailing frequency of the cruise ships as well as the cost for each one. Secondly, you will need to decide what time of the year you want to visit, whether to go in the winter or summer. This will often depend on your other commitments, such as work and family.

You need to be very careful booking during the high season, as many boats will often be booked well in advance. It is recommended that you make your reservations several months in advance of your trip. If you have to make a last minute reservation, then you may be forced to choose a cruise that you do not really want or pay extra money.

You must also check if you need vaccinations before travelling to the region. If you are only going to the Galapagos Islands, you will not need a vaccination. However, if you will be visiting mainland Ecuador, then vaccinations are often recommended. You should check this with your doctor. The typical vaccinations are for typhoid, hepatitis A, and diphtheria. Be sure to arrange this well in advance of your trip, as many vaccines must be administered three months before travelling.

You may want to spend lots of time exploring the area during your stay. The highlands, which are located in the larger islands, are normally green and lush. The islands located at sea level have many shorelines with very little precipitation. From June to December the area experiences a dry season, with only brief showers. During this time, the sea mammals and birds tend to be very active.

Most cruises do not have a formal dress code on board. Generally, you will be required to wear shoes and a shirt when attending lunch and dinner. Certain cruises, such as the Xpedition, the Parranda, or the Isabella II, require people to wear long pants at each meal.

The Galapagos has become popular for its plethora of wildlife. There are many diverse species of animals and birds living there. Many naturalists come from all over the world to learn about them and observe their special breeding patterns. Many video documentaries have been made of this region.

The official currency there is the US Dollar, so make sure you bring plenty of money with you for buying souvenirs or drinks. However, if you run out, there are many ATM machines and banks that you can access.
