They are all very different and so in a few days of visits it is possible to see an incredible array of animals which cannot be seen anywhere else. Depending on the time of year it is possible to see lots of different nesting seabirds, sealions, penguins, hammerhead sharks, marine iguanas and the famous tortoises.

The area is now a national park and the authorities have put strict rules in place to protect the flora and fauna. Access is limited so it is far easier to take an organized tour than to try and travel there independently. There are a number of different styles and sizes of boat to choose from with the largest carrying about one hundred passengers. Most of the tours take in a range of islands so that passengers get to see the full variety of animals available so the main things to consider are price and comfort.

The archipelago is reached by plane from mainland Ecuador, either from Quito or Guayaquil. The visitor numbers are strictly controlled to preserve the pristine environment so using a tour company is the easiest way to make sure you get the best of your trip. Boat sizes vary, some have a few cabins and a few can carry about one hundred passengers.

The Inkas left a huge number of sacred sites, palaces and forts for the adventurous traveler to discover. Machu Picchu is the most famous and was voted one of the new wonders of the modern world. The location and the architecture are both impressive. It is situated on top of a mountain overlooking the high jungle region with steep hills shrouded in misty forests.

Any tour has to take visitors to Cusco. This was the Inca capital and is now a charming historical city with modern amenities. From there, travelers take a unique train ride down the Sacred Valley to the mysterious citadel of Machu Picchu. It is situated in the high jungle and the climate is totally different from a few miles away in the city, it is humid and warm with palm trees and orchids.

Travelling to the high Andes requires some planning. The rainy season can be challenging for visitors and the climate is unique. It is dry and hot during the day and cool, even cold at night. At 3300 meters above sea level, Cusco can cause some visitors to suffer from altitude sickness so make sure to prepare well.

A trip of this nature requires quite a lot of organization. Both places require special passes and have to enforce rules to preserve their current states. An organized tour always includes a guide who makes sure that travelers understand the rules and have everything they need. It is a hassle free way to see two of the most precious places in the world.
