Staying At Watch Hill Beach RI

By Angela Briggs

Visitors and locals alike have been enjoying the spectacular natural beauty of Watch Hill Beach RI for generations. This wonderful area is located only eighty miles south of Boston which makes it perfect for a day out. Of course, many people like to stay for much longer to enjoy not just the sand and surf but also the many attractions the area has to offer.

The name of the beach came from its prominent location on a peninsular of land almost surrounded by water. Along the shore visitors can enjoy a view out to Block Island Sound and beyond. The area has always had strategic importance for the people who lived here as it provides panoramic views out to sea. It was the home of the Niantic Indians for centuries before the European settlers arrived.

One of the best places to visit is the local lighthouse. Lighthouses are so symbolic of the region and really create that nautical feeling. Many people like to take home a photograph or painting of the lighthouse to remind them of their visit. It makes a beautiful walk on a summer day, or even in the crisp days of the fall. Scheduling a tour of the building is also a great addition to the trip.

Seafood lovers will really think they are in heaven on a visit to this delightful corner of Rhode Island. Washington County is well known for its fresh lobster and other sea food delicacies. The local restaurants do an excellent job of preparing the fresh fish and many people take advantage of outdoor dining in the spring and summer. There is just nothing to compare to tucking into a delicious meal whilst enjoying the twinkling of the sun on the water and the smell of the ocean nearby.

The area is also a sailors paradise. There are many local marinas that offer charter sails for everyone. Those with children along may want to go out whale watching. More experienced sailors will love to get out on the water for a day under sail. There are evening cruises under the stars, complete with champagne and chocolates for the most romantic of couples. Kayaks are also available to rent for full or half day outings to explore the many coves and bays along the coast line.

The area around Watch Hill Beach was first developed as a resort in the early twentieth century. People from Boston and New York were looking for places to go to beat the summer heat and humidity. At this time many grand hotels and friendly guest houses were build. Many of them remain in business today, some are even run by the original families. Guests are sure of a warm welcome and every step is taken to ensure that their stay is perfect.

Shopping is a big part of any vacation and Watch Hill has plenty to offer. There are some wonderful local stores selling unique crafts made by local artisans. Everywhere the ocean theme is represented in everything from artwork to ornaments.

Watch Hill Beach RI is the perfect vacation destination. There really is something for everyone, from families with young children to retirees looking for a quiet off season get away. The summer season offers lots of entertainment. There are concerts in July and August, lobster festivals, art exhibits and museums.
