Marine conveyance involves the movement of people and cargo across the water. This transportation can be realized by the use of water vessels such as boats and ships. It requires a captain who is qualified enough to take the vessel through the journey successfully. All decisions, the ability of the cargo and passengers to reach their destination depends on the type of captain a vessel has. So, for you to become a good captain, you need to have the necessary qualities. Below are the qualities of a marine transport captain.

Communication skills. A good ship commander must be able to communicate effectively. The communication made should be able to be transferred to the crew members and passengers on board clearly and in time. This allows the ship staff to perform their duties as required and in the right manner. This depends on the reliance of the captain to pass the information. The type of language used should also be good and one which can be understood clearly by everyone on board.

Critical thinking ability. Dealing with problems might be a very challenging task especially to a captain who lacks the ability to think critically. Devising of solutions to certain problems must be wholly based on critical thinking for the best solutions to be provided. Logic and reasoning are the two main parts of critical thinking that each and every person in such a position should employ when dealing with such situations.

Employ leadership skills. A captain is the head of the ship. They are the ones who command the crew and oversee all the activities that occur inside the vessel. In short, they act as leaders who every person in there look upon. So, they must be good leaders so as to fit in this position. A person in such a position must have good leadership skills for them to serve as needed and provide the right leadership.

One should be physically fit. Physical fitness is a high demand in this career occupation. A person who serves as a captain must be fit physically for them to adequately meet all their roles. During emergencies, the captain is needed to move in a swift manner to attend to their daily roles and at the same time offer any needed assistance to the crew. Their daily duties are also highly involving as they require long hours of attendance.

Team player. As the captain, you will be required to work with other persons. This includes the engineers and the others who help in the running of the ship. This requires much teamwork. You should also be friendly and open minded towards the other crew members so as to ensure unity among them.

One who employs courage. A leader should have courage so as to serve as needed. Some decisions require you to face them with courage while knowing that the life of your crew and other passengers depend on your choice.

Self-control is also required for the leader to focus well. As a captain, you should be able to control yourself regardless of the condition you are in. This calls for several things such as the avoidance of aggression towards the other crew members or passengers. Learn how to manage anger so as to avoid letting it out of control. This will improve the relationship between you and the other people.
