Watching Monkeys In Borneo

By Jonny Blair

If you're staying in Sabah in Malaysia on the island of Borneo, it's highly likely you'll have heard of proboscis monkeys. They are wild, they live in the jungle and they have long noses. But more importantly they are native to the island of Borneo (Malaysia, Brunei Darussalam and Indonesia). This is the only place on planet earth that you can see them outside a zoo. It's worth doing, and naturally it's a popular touristy thing to do.

How to organise watching Proboscis Monkeys in Borneo.

There are lots of companies offering these types of tours in Borneo so it will be easy enough to organise. If you are a really tight budget backpacker then you could realistically hitchhike or hire a car and drive out to Beaufort Town yourself then try to blag onto one of the boats that take you to where the proboscis monkeys are. I really don't recommend it.

How much does watching Proboscis Monkeys in Borneo cost?

Overall you should expect to pay around 60 Ringitts. This includes almost everything you need on the tour such as boats, transport there and back and of course the afternoon tea and the buffet dinner. It is a really good trip well worth booking!

What is the best way to get to the Monkey Park? How can we get out there?

Normally mini-bus presents the best way to do it. The bus collects you and is a perfect option for everybody as you go together to the park. This makes it easy to organise and everything runs smoothly for the travelling tourist.

Getting to Klias Wetlands Park should be easy enough - our transport was included in the tour and it usually is. It's in the heart of the jungles of Borneo but this doesn't stop the whole trip being amazing. It makes for an incredible experience even just getting there.

What is watching Proboscis Monkeys in Borneo all about?

They are wild monkeys with long noses and long tails they live in the jungle. You will see them hanging from trees, sitting on trees and swinging from tree to tree. It's all exactly as you imagined monkey life to be. This is a well recommended trip. There are also crocodiles so stay alert and have your cameras ready to catch them in action.
