What Is A Corn Maze?

By Iva Cannon

There are lovely things that can be created outside using nature with just a little bit of skill and imagination. A corn maze is a great example of design and nature meeting to create beautiful designs when looking down from above, but also providing fun and entertainment from the ground. You are bound to have lots of fun making your way through a maze, and mazes like this have become huge attractions for tourists over the years.

The largest of these mazes is located in California in an area called Dixon. This particular maze was featured in the Guinness World Book of Records in 2010. However, in Ohio in an area just outside of Dayton, there is a location known as Adventure Acres which is home to a maze of just over sixty acres and almost nine miles of trails within it.

Farmers must plan the features of mazes very carefully before they begin planting. It is very important to consider the strength and height of the stalk in order to select the right variety of corn. The inside of the stalk must be cut properly when creating the walkways, so that regrowth does not happen where the walkway is.

A very common disease in the stalks is rotting, which can make a huge difference to the overall result. Stalk rotting can happen because of bad fertilization or it could be a moisture problem. Farmers also need to take into account when they plant the corn for the maze, as it is a completely different cycle to planting regular crops which are used for grain.

Mazes can be fun for all ages. There are many different kinds to provide hours of entertainment for families and individuals alike. Children will love finding their way out of daytime mazes. These are usually about nine feet high when the weather permits. Depending on the size of the maze, kids can spend a good half hour to and hour making their way through. There are even other fun features like solving clues and puzzles along the way. This is perfect for a children's birthday party at the right time of the year.

Teenagers may well enjoy visiting one of these sites during the night. They can still solve puzzles or find clues to a prize, but in the night time this requires additional skill due to the dark, hence why it is better for the older ones. Flashlights make the experience more thrilling, and there is lots of fun to be had trying to find the way out with friends.

For young adults and older individuals, a haunted version is probably the most exciting way to explore. This is great particularly at Halloween, or even for some sort of murder mystery-style party. The suspense of making your way to the exit with unexpected thrills and screams and laughter is definitely not something you will forget any time soon!

In England, they are called maize mazes and are generally found in the east of the country. Most times, farmers will include other attractions for day visitors to these sites. These may include petting zoos, pony rides, hay rides or picnic zones for the whole family to enjoy. It is a good way to make extra income for farmers in the region.
