Mongolian Tours Offer Something Different

By Marci Glover

Vacations today are often about seeing something totally different. Many visitors are no longer satisfied with spending time on the beach. They are looking for a truly unique experience where they get to see things up close and really get an idea of how other cultures live. With this in mind many tour companies are now specializing in off the beaten path vacations.

International travel is now much easier than it used to be. Flights are available from all major airports and prices are surprisingly affordable. Those looking for something a little out of the ordinary are now choosing Mongolian tours as one of their top picks. This amazing country has so much to offer. Spectacular scenery, a rich heritage and culture, very friendly people and a chance to experience the great outdoors.

Most tours begin and end in the capital city of Ulaanbaatar. This vibrant city is home to over a million people and is growing at a very fast pace. It combines many traditional elements of Mongolia, yet still has a modern feel. The local people offer a very warm welcome and most visitors are immediately struck by the friendly and cosmopolitan vibe of the city.

Visitors should be well aware that in Mongolian custom it is considered very rude, almost unacceptable, to refuse the food that is offered. Anyone who is a picky eater or a vegetarian will be left facing some difficult choices and may well be left hungry. On the other hand the bold and adventurous types will relish tucking into some traditional foods and enjoying the company of the local people. It is a once in a life time experience and should be enjoyed to the fullest extent.

Undoubtedly the most popular festival is the Naadam, which takes place in the capital city of Ulaanbaatar in July. This is considered one of the must see events of a trip to Mongolia. Although it can get very busy it is worth spending a day or two taking in the sights, sounds and tastes of this festival.

The skilled nomadic people love to compete in ways that test their skill and courage. Even the young boys take part in fast and exciting horse races. There is also the chance to watch traditional dances and enjoy some interesting foods. The music may sound unusual to Western ears but it really is a reflection of the fascinating history of the country.

Getting out into the great outdoors is an integral part of a trip to Mongolia. There is so much to see it is very important to plan carefully to fit in as much as possible. The Uran Uul is an extinct volcano that offers amazing views. The walk up to the rim is in itself a wonderful experience.

Food in Mongolia is very different to the west. Many dishes use fermented goat milk. Meat is an important part of the diet and often includes goat and sheep. It is customary to offer visitors food and considered unacceptable to decline. Travellers should be aware of this follow the local etiquette.
