The confusion that comes with female midlife crisis results from the realization that most of your life is behind you. It is mostly triggered menopause, the departure of children from home, aging or death of parents, unrealized career dreams as well as unemployment or underemployment. A person begins to compare his childhood dreams and current achievements.

Women acquire a strong desire to drastically change their lives. They seek work balance, change of relationships, appearance, career and a different perspective in marriage. They are likely to spend or desire to spend more. It is accompanied by a flood of regrets and thoughts. A history of psychological turmoil is considered a disposal factor. The response and symptoms in each person varies.

The onset period is between the ages of 40 and 60. It lasts 2 to five years on average. It is necessary to separate normal crisis from those caused by age. The death of a spouse is stressing on its own. The turmoil that comes with work related changes or disappointment is normal. The same applies to the need and desire to meet basic financial needs. This form of turmoil depends on lifestyle and other factors that have little to do with age.

A lot of regret and berating results from relationship choices, career options, aging or death of parents, the presence or absence of children and a changing appearance due to age. Women begin to criticize their roles and decisions in the past. They want to adapt a different lifestyle or path in life. Men on the other hand are likely to get sporty and even buy expensive sport cars. Everything becomes emotionally driven.

Time seems to move very fast at the age of 40-60. This is when a woman reflects backwards and realizes the lost opportunities in childhood or youth. She fears that more successful friends and colleagues will humiliate her. There is a strong desire to do the things of youth despite advancement in age.

A lady desires to spend most of the time in solitude or with a specific group. Some of the behaviors that may be exhibited include alcohol and drug abuse and acquisition of unusual stuff like jewelry, tattoos, piercing, gadgets and clothing, among other lifestyle related materials. Doing anything wrong causes unusually strong remorse. The lady is overly concerned about her appearance. She is likely to turn to youthful clothing to cover for it.

There is a shift in relationship trends where the lady gets engaged to younger or strange men. She is looking for parental, sexual and professional identity. As a parent, the concern for children to excel in academics, sports and art increases. This turmoil takes a lot of mental energy but it is easy to deal with when one is mentally prepared.

Talking to a therapist or a trusted friend is the best remedy for female midlife crisis. Take advantage of every opportunity you get when you are young to avoid regrets. Consider midlife as a passing season and embrace it. Exercise regular and enjoy a good dietary habit. Take the suggestions that come to mind at this time and work on them. Do not be overwhelmed by the feeling.
