By Ines Flores

In a survival tool kit, one item that is never missing is the paracord. It is very simple, practical and can be used by anyone at any given time. It is also cool and trendy. This is highly versatile-filament nylon cord that has unlimited applications. It can be used in different situation by different people and comes with huge benefits. Originally, it is made from seven strong nylon cords. Each of the seven cords is made of equally strong woven strands that are smaller in size. All these are then wrapped in a flexible outer branded nylon wrapper. This gives results to a cord that has a combined breaking strength of 550 pounds. This is why it is commonly known as a 550 paracord.

It was first widely used to contract parachutes during the World War II. In fact, this is how the cord drove its name 'para' cord. Other than its wide military applications, the cord is now common in our homes. Other organized troops like the police, the scout, the coast guard, research stations, forest guards, and wildlife guards also find it very helpful. For this reason, there are other non-military or commercial varieties.

However, the civilian or commercial version may not have the said seven inner yarns or if it does, the inner yarns may not be made of 3 strands each. However, depending on the purpose, the civilian version still works for many ordinary applications.

The same cannot be said of all the civilian varieties. In some cases, there are only 5 cords instead of seven or two strands per cord instead of 3. This might compromise their strength. However, depending on what purpose it is to be used, these varieties still good enough to serve for many applications.

The benefits are also countless. First, its strength cannot be compared with any other cord in the similar category. The sting is only one eighth inch diameter, but has a breaking strength of 550 lbs. It is also very durable. It can withstand countless uses without being compromised in flexibility.

These cords have very many advantages over the ordinary ones. With a small diameter of an eighth of an inch, it has a breaking force of 550 pounds. It is therefore used for heavy load towing, and support weight of humans and even heavier objects. Its durability is also impressive and the cord is capable of resisting water, mildew and other moist conditions that quickly destroy the ordinary cords.

When it comes to the area of uses, the list is simply endless. However, there are some ideas that make it a necessity at home. It works best as a clothesline, a tarp tie down, a towline, string for supporting tents and poles or building of shelters. The other possible areas of applications include the lanyard, fire bow, shelter making, shoe lace, garden lines, and equipment guy-lines, pack strap, fasten, survival kit, lifeline and several others.

The areas of applications are indispensable. In addition to commonly used like cloth lines, life line, survival kits, lanyard, fire bow, and tarp tie among others, the individual strings can be used as emergency stitches after they are boiled, for dental floss, ordinary sewing, fishing lines, and even shoe laces.
